  • John Vanderslice - Amitripyline: It is likely that I've only heard this song once before. It's from the album "the life and death of an american four-tracker."  It's a narrative about a psychotic, depressive person.  This antidepressant is used to treat depressive illnesses of a psychotic nature.

Hella - City Folk Sitting, Sitting: This Hella song is from "Hold Your Horse Is."  This is, yet, another band that I have not heard in a while.  I love their compositions.  Imagine a guitar/drum duet playing wildly, intricate music that oftentimes makes you forget it's only two people.  The song starts dragging midway.  They don't tighten it up into the usual hella frenticisms as soon as you'd expect, but they get there inevitably.  At the tail end is a sweet, pop hook.

Of Montreal - Maple Licorice: Oh, Of Montreal! I love how you write a one minute song that is self-aware and then stick it on an album called "Then Who Will Protect Big Oil, Our Children."

The 6ths - Winter In July: This exercise of commenting on random songs my computer give me is getting boring.  I have a take-home midterm to finish.

Comes - Panic:  This song is from a Japanese 80s hardcore punk band.  The singer sounds like he is 13, but that's alright.  The guitar solo tells me that Japanese punk bands knew what was going on.  This compilation, "Nagasaki Nightrider," was worth every penny that I never spent but would have spent had I ever came across the physical procuct.

Def Choice - Willie's Not Alone
Kung Fu Rick- So Much More: After these last two songs, I am definitely done with this for then night.  Sheesh.

In other news, I am going to St. Norbert's College tomorrow in Wisconsin for a math conference.  Next week, the Departures are playing the Bradley 24 hour Dance Marathon.  We'll be playing 3-4am. It will be our first show with Sean playing drums and James playing Bass.  It will be a good time.

Remember my last post?  I had decided to delete my list, forget about it and never mention it again.  Then I changed my mind.  I had actually deleted it though so now I'll try to recreate it from memory.  I will not order the list, unfortunately, because that is harder to recall.  {Quasi, Morissey, Brian Wilson, the Hold Steady,...}  Wow, I am disappointed that I can only remember 4/10 right now.  I think Polysics may have been there too.  Here's a new random list:

    1. Melt Banana - Dust Head
    2. The First Step - We All Die
    3. My Lai - Song For Broken Trains
    4. Sun Kill Moon - Gentle Moon
    5. The Kinks - Set Me Free
    6. Pretty Girls Make Graves - Something Bigger, Something Brighter
    7. Discordance Axis - Castration Rite
    8. Deerhoof - Sealed With A Kiss
    9. Lifetime - Bedtime (live)

Commentary: What surprised me the most about this list was how it heavily concentrated on modern independent music.  The earliest song was by the Kinks.  There wasn't a single 50s rock song, early folk, country, or bluegrass tune.  I was pleased to hear Something Bigger, Something Brighter again.  I haven't listened to PGMG since last year.  Their album The New Romance was played frequently last year at 1010 N Elmwood.  I am a little disappointed that no Beach Boys' songs appeared.  They're the best!

Has anyone else on xanga seen that crystal ball banner at the top of their screen?  I just received an encouraging answer from it.  I've been feeling quite a bit of pressure this week because I still don't have a senior project.  I haven't decided on a topic or an advisor.  I've got a lot of candidates.  Also, I've begun applying for graduate school and I'm having a lot of doubts in my potential as a mathematician.  A few days ago I felt a lot of stress.  Then I felt excitement.  I was tickled by the risk and adventure of pursuing a career that might be a total flop.  The idea of facing a really challenging future and having no idea whether I'll even succeed is terrific!  Maybe I won't have what it takes mentally and creatively do do original research and advance our body of mathematical knowledge.  What a gamble I'm taking!  I decided I would let the crystal ball decide my future.  The first 2 times I asked the question "Should I be a mathematician?" it said "Try Again Later."  The third time was the charm: it said, "It is certain."

I talked to Rachael about 30 minutes ago.  She was at Universal Studios waiting in line to tour a haunted house.  I'm so happy that she's having a wonderful time out east.  She was a little worried about the hurricanes.  She will be back in my arms before noon tomorrow.  Now dig this!  I'm not much into missing people.  I love my friend and all, but I get on with my life and its tasks.  I don't feel anything what I would call "missing" often.  The day after Rachael left, I went to her house to visit her roommates.  I walked into her room.  Its familiar scents "sent me there" and, man, I felt that pain.  I wanted to be near her.  Later that night I felt so bored.  I wanted to be with Rachael.  The next day I was with my dad (dad's bday on sat. / mom's on mon.) and I fell asleep.  I dreamt of her.  I heard love songs on all the oldies stations from here to Indiana.  I thought of her.  I sent her a text message, and she replied, letting me know that she missed me.  She said "I reached for you this morning, but you weren't there."  So there we are folks, my gal and I, got something special going for us.

    The rules of the meme:
    1. Open a music player.
    2. Go to 'all music'/'library'.
    3. Hit shuffle/repeat/randomise.
    4. Find photos of the first 10 artists/bands that come up [no repeats and no cheating].
    5. Have people guess who the artists/bands are.

I found this game on livejournal.  Normally, I don't play these dumb things, but I thought this was might be interesting.  I was excited about seeing which 10 artists would appear randomly.  I was hoping that some good 60s artists would appear.  I imagined how hard it would be to find pictures of some of those folk and blues artists from the 20's.  I got my random artists.  Right before I started writing this entry, I decided I wasn't going to search for photographs and instead just list the 10 random artists.  The image search and guessing just doesn't sound as appealling to me as the simple act of generating a short random list of songs from a collection exceeding 22,500.  Maybe I'll post the list later.  Maybe I'll only post 10 images.  Maybe I won't even mention this game again.  I'm going to work now.

Rachael flew to Florida today for an entrepreneurship conference..  She's going to bring me back an orange. I pray she'll be safe during her trip.
